Enchanted Owl

By: Kenojuak Ashevak

''Enchanted Owl" by Kenojuak Ashevak is a picture of an owl with orange and black long feathers and big claws was made in 1960.The artist used a stone cut and stencil technique to achieve this look. The types of lines that the artist used in her artwork is thick, thin, straight, curved, and messy lines, which are on the feathers mostly. The shapes I see are circles which are used for the eyes. Some of texture that are used are dull, smooth, hard, and bold. the colours I see are orange, black and white colours.

The first thing I see is the eyes of the owl, because the eyes are bolder and in the centre of the artwork, normally when look at something you tend to look at the centre. The artwork is asymmetrical, because the owl is on the side which puts the head more on the right also the feathers have different lines/colors on each side. On the left the artwork is orange which makes it more brighter and the on the right the artwork is black which makes it more darker. When you look at the owl you can see that the owl looks like it's on the side and staring. The small dots on the body of the owl is repeated and the the curved/straight feathers are repeated, but have different lengths and thickness.

When I look at the artwork I see that the staring owl is changing to black-orange. I feel like the artist is trying to say something about being brave. I'm not sure if the artist is concerned with imitating nature, expressing feeling, lines, colour, texture, and design, because the artwork is very simple and mysterious. The title of the artwork doesn't really show the meaning of it.

I would describe the artwork as mysterious, because the artwork had a feeling that I never felt before even though I see that the artwork is simple. I like the ''Enchanted Owl'' by Kenojuak Ashevak, I don't know why but I have this weird and strange feeling when I look at the artwork. Also  I like how the black changes to orange.

Logo Assignment

This week I was assigned to make a logo for my own company. I had to make 3 different types of logos; combination, typographic, and pictorial. The combination logo had to have a colour and black & white copy, the typographic logo had to have a black & white and colour copy, and the pictorial logo had to have a black & white, colour, and grayscale copy.

Analysis

My company’s name is called Animanic; my company makes music for anime TV shows and movies that are for young girl teenagers mostly. My style is simple, cute, and creative. I am a simple, neat, and nice person. The animal I did was the giant panda. The panda is a relaxed, peaceful and simple like me. Pandas are black and white bears; they have black fur on the ears, shoulder, muzzle, legs, and around the eyes. The rest of the panda is white. I did the panda second, because the first one which was a girl wearing earphones wasn’t really cute; also I felt that the girl was good but I though I could make another one even better in my option.

The logo I did was a panda with a crown. I used a cursive/hand writing font and I put a line at the bottom of the writing to make it a little fancy for the typographic/combination logo. I think that the pictorial color works the best, because you can see the crown’s/blush’s color and the logo is cuter without the writing. By knowing the colors, it compliments the black and white pretty well. I used bright colors (pink/yellow), because I didn’t want the panda to be plain I wanted it to be cute and balanced in color. My second logo was a girl wearing earphones. I used a cursive/handwriting font and I put two lines, one on the top and one on the bottom of the writing to make it a little fancy. I think the combination black & white logo works the best, because it feels really calm since the hair was blowing in the wind and the name blended in the picture.

When I look at this panda I feel warm and relaxed. I put the panda in my logo, because when you’re listening to music you usually feel relaxed and peaceful. And anime was created in Japan, so I picked an asian animal. By using black and white for the panda it makes the yellow and pink feel bright and warm, which creates a peaceful and relax feeling. Watching TV shows and movies makes a lot of people feel excited and comfortable, because everyone can relax, have some alone time or have fun with family/friends. I am aiming to get the same feeling in my logo. When I looked at the girl I felt that it had a little bit of a lonely and sad feeling, because the girl looked lonely.

In conclusion, I think that the pictorial color logo works the best, because when you change the size you can still see it. When you change it into a gray scale or black & white version it still steads out and looks good still. When it’s just the name it’s still steads out and still attractive. Same for the girl logo it still steads out when you take away the name or picture. I wished that I could change the name of my company, because it doesn’t really suit the logo as much as I thought. I decided to choose the panda logo, because the girl with earphones wasn’t really cute as much as the panda and it felt little lonely when I looked at it for a long time.
